Last I heard all of SA's gas generators were still available at reasonable notice (not "mothballed"), and high gas power pricing was solely caused by gas suppliers gaming the system. I don't make it my point clear enough, what's your answer to replace base load generation? A link to grid solutions in Germany, which is completely different to what we have here to contend with? I'm not pro coal, I am pro nuc, I'm also pro common sense, as I said, I sell renewables, grid connected and off grid solar systems, but actually having worked in generation, distribution and many aspects of the power industry at both baseload generators, and Peaker plants, you have the ability to observe things, the most idealists don't, not wish to

Natural gas requires about $70MW for larger generators, non Peaker to be worth running, that's double what's generally contractual price

Of course it's profit before people, only just realised you live in a capitalism country? you could always build a grass hut and adopt subsistence living, if you really wished to do your bit, but instead we spend on the plethora of mined, earth damaging refined goods, talking about the good that we should do? Ironic hey:)

I know lots of people here living in grass huts, without power or running water, it,s no fun at all. I don't see swarms of no emissions folk rushing to join them.

It's funny how there is a group with Al the mod cons, electricity, water, medicine, air travel, A/C, the list goes on, want to deny a large slice of humanity the same opportunity.

If it's a matter about saving the planet and your committed, it's simple, have no kids. In a 100 years problem solved. :o:wasntme:

And why would you want to give poor people coal power plants? They poison their surroundings, ruin local water supplies and give the displaced peasants $1 per day jobs in giant factories making western consumer tat. Barking mad. Better give them solar panels and batteries so they can manage their own lives.

Anyway, all these snide references to some imagined idyllic greenie lifestyle are complete rubbish, and you all know that. If you continue to believe that coal power is irreplaceable, that's your problem. I prefer to believe the engineers committed to building smart solutions instead of dumb lumpen technology. :)

Modern engineers'mmost solar passive homes are built by smart logical people, not modern engineers:D

Where is that going? Cause it needs more glazing and cross ventilation to function well ideally, but take away from the aesthetics they obviously are after

Shutting down plants prior to having a plan in place is retarded, we can't run on ideals, being put in a reactive situation to power supply is very bad for society, as I have mentioned, 3rd world stuff, here we come

Actually we do give them Solar, look up the Barefoot brand, and we run on hydro, methane and biomass. About 5 mW worth. We talk the talk and walk the walk. But I bet heavy industry base load dependent is nowear ready for the transition. S.A for example would be more honest speaking of what they consume, in terms of no enable not what they produce.

Oh the 4,500 ex subsistence workers we employ get a lot more than $1 per day.

Not saying coal is irreplaceable, but I am saying it is currently the best source for base power in many locations in 2016.

And I continue to say the long term problem is population growth, and excessive consumption, power generation is but a consequence

At 5s 131e am off grid with 5,000 others and no coal was used in this post

All I can say is we shouldn't have rushed to close down Flinders until we had an established and proven "renewable source" in place..

Coal may not be the future but it was the now, and until the future has been fully established we should run the now as cleanly as possible - and work hard on the next generation (sic) technology.
