Hmmm, things must have changed recently. In 2005 I did West to East via the Gunbarrel (Wiluna-Warburton) then to Alice & the Plenty to Boulia without a permit.
A permit must be required from Laverton to Warburton then.
Steve
p,s. A permit was required for the "Old Gunbarrel" route for safety purposes but I didn't go there.
From what I can see, Permits are required from Cosmo Newberry to Yulara according to Camps 8 which uses Hema Maps dated 2015.
Spot on mate!

ACCESSING SHIRE OF LAVERTON WEIGHT-RESTRICTED ROADSWA ABORIGINAL LAND:
PERMITS REQUIRED FOR TRAVELLING ALONG THE OUTBACK WAY
A permit is required when travelling through Aboriginal land such as the Great Central Road, Tjukaruru Road (Docker River) and most of the roads-tracks leading off the Outback Way between Laverton and Yulara.
Travellers driving along the main route- Great Central Road (Laverton to WA/NT Border) and Tjukaruru Rd (Yulara to NT/WA Border) can apply for a transit permit from the Central Land Council (NT), Department of Indigenous Affairs (WA). Special permission is required to travel off the Outback Way to places of particular interest and travellers can apply to the Ngaanyatjarra Council (NT), allowing 7-10 working days for a permit.
and.....................................
Gunbarrel Highway
The Gunbarrel Highway only requires a permit to travel through the closed area within the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. Travellers need to call the Ngaanyatjarra Council at their Alice Springs head office on: (08) 8950 1711 for travel permits for the Gunbarrel Highway. See also ‘Permit Information’ at this website: http://tjukayirlaroadhouse.com.au/
so, could be a little confusing.

If a permit is required to travel through privately owned land then I'm quite happy to pay it, assuming the funds go to help the landowners. However, in other cases when public money goes to upgrade a road through private land, the route is usually resumed to become public land, with a payment to the landowners. I wonder if that would be a condition of federal funding for the Outback Way.
This will be the end of many special places and the ruin of a enjoyable drive.Returned to a location that we happened upon some years ago , before it was marked on any hema publication . So sad to see it had been listed on wiki camps so now its just a way side stop for candy baggers and bogan 4x4 action tools. When your looking at a secret business place and JOHNO 2016 has left his mark along with dick and balls in paint pen . This **** pen work along side some simple traditional art , shines a light on our ability to **** in our own nest.
