Yes, but find one of his songs, write the words out, and repeat them without music. I challenge any one to do that, and call it poetry.

There was an icon before Dylan. One man influenced Dylan more than any other. And this man was Woody Guthrie.

The decision has met a mixed response.

But you have to love it when the 'cultural elite' have their nose out of joint.

And that would not be lost on Bob Dylan.

Deciding what fits literature reminds me of deciding what is sport when it comes to the Olympics.

Guthrie was great, but he needed to go on longer to win a lifetime award.

    Dylan Nobel Prize.

There is more political and racial angst in 5 minutes and 40 seconds of
"The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" on the LP, as it was then, "The Times Are A Changing" than most newer social commentary books have in 500 pages.
Same also for "With God On Our Side","Hard Rain Gonna Fall", I could go on.
All Hail to His Bobness, without doubt the greatest and most profound lyricist (not songwriter) of our (my) generation.
    Well deserved.

And that is the heart of the matter. I quote from the cover of Dylans' record, Judas Priest,

" the moral of the song
Is simply that one should never be
Where ones does not belong "

By surrendering to the cultural elite, Dylan has turned his back on a lifetime of sticking it up the establishment , standing up for the little man. He is now one of the cultural elite, his credibility is shot. Perhaps that's what the establishment wanted, after all.

Among the five prizes provided for in Alfred Nobel's will (1895), one was intended for the person who, in the literary field, had produced "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction". The Laureate should be determined by "the Academy in Stockholm", which was specified by the statutes of the Nobel Foundation to mean the Swedish Academy. These statutes defined literature as "not only belles-lettres, but also other writings which, by virtue of their form and style, possess literary value".

That should do it. There's always a loophole. Still, the definition of literary value is an open book.

Yes a double thumbs up for Woody Guthrey, the guy was a legend. As was stated he was Dylan's idol and inspiration, he's life's story is quite a sad one. On the "establishment" issue do artists have to die broke and lonely like woody for people to not see them as a sellout?
