Keep in mind only a small % of wells are fracked, as it often isn't necessary, and only a minute amount of chemical is used. Also there are natural gas leaks everywhere - very common. I bet gas is leaking on many house blocks naturally and people don't even know.

What is fracking, and why is it controversial? From the BBC, with a short video on how they may use fracking in National Parks in the UK. Also a video on how fracking works.

That's the most common way of fracking, and if done right has a lower impact.
The type done by Linc and possibly 2 other companies in Qld is very different and far more dangerous, instead of injecting water and chemicals to crack open the seam and siphon of gasses, they set it alight now its burning at around 1000deg C and if there are any unknown faults or cracks into the coal seam it will leak AND suck in more air to burn faster. This will then cause parts to collapse resulting in further leaks and seepage.
Throw in that this was a shallow seam, not 1200m but 1-200 below ground , and the byproducts will be leeching into surrounding soils and coming to the surface much quicker.
A worst case scenario for a shallow coal seam:

I'm told that most of the gas wells around Miles in Queensland were NOT fracked because it was unnecessary. Also, the 'burning river' that such a fuss was made about was natural and that leak has existed for a long time.

Yes, the burning river is natural. The burning tap water, unfortunately is not. Heavily contaminated with proprietary drilling chemicals. And I do mean proprietary, because different companies use their own secret herbs and spices so can be traced.....

The towns of the Western Downs are between a rock and a hard place. If they protest the mining / fracking, they lose jobs, and the town dies a natural death. No one I know in the towns out that way wants to stop the mining, jobs mean survival, some cattle & sheep station owners are worried about their ground water quality, but are pragmatic about most of the issues, hoping the mining companies are truthful when they say the fracking is safe. It is not a worry I would like to have.

Umm...be interested to know your source as there are companies that have stock frack sand in the area.

    Doesn't mean it was used.
