Apart from counting defenders yesterday on my tour from Perth to Freo and then Swan Valley, after reading this post I decided to see just how many people were on their phones on a Saturday over here on a combination of highways, back roads and suburban streets.

I can report that here in Myanmar everyone talks on their mobiles while driving or riding motorcycles. Bluetooth seems non-existent. Of course, on narrow roads clogged with buses, trucks, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, buffalo, cows, dogs and suicidal chickens, 40 km/h seems to be about a safe speed, so everything happens slower anyway. Maybe if we Aussies all slowed down the problem would be solved.

The additional fatigue slow laborious driving invokes is one of the key causes of many accidents.

When my employer had an operation in Myanmar in the eighties, our company's only fatality was a road accident - rushing to get home before the curfew. Another very close call was when a surveyor, heading back to camp after overnight satellite observations just after the curfew ended (still dark). His driver was following the usual practice of driving at night without lights, and ran into the load of a broken down timber jinker on the main highway up the Sittang valley. The log went through the windscreen of the Landcruiser between him and the driver.
Did have a helicopter crash though, with about eight injured, some seriously. Of course there were no mobile phones then - in fact, it was extremely difficult to get any form of communication licence.
