    Disco 5 Pre Launch

A few nights ago I accepted an invitation to attend the pre launch of the Disco 5 at the Royal Sydney Yacht Club. An 'interesting' evening at a very nice location where so much could have been done to show off the new car but unfortunately it didn't move from it's display position all night.
Suffice to say that it will require a really good battery to cope with all the electronic gadgetry. The 285x40R22 tyres/wheels would probably be good for driving across the Harbour Bridge or around Mt Panaroma but not so good for climbing Mt Pinnibar or Mt Walker. A claimed weight reduction of 500kg, an increase of 40mm ground clearance and massive torque from the diesel engine all sound good.

And NO, I didn't buy it as it was LHD and was on it's way to Melbourne and then Canada for more pre release showings.

Here's a few 'graphs I managed to snap with my phone.

285/40R22 equats approximately a 31" tyre + alot possible rim damage.

And that was evidenced by the majority of people there who seemed to just want to get their photo taken with it and showed very little interest in how it differed from its predecessor.

The bonnet wasn't even lifted for the first two hours.

Let's face it. Even a horde of happy D4 owners will jump from their perfectly good vehicle into one...

Its the consumer world (and a tax loophole)

Discovery 5 is built off the Range Rover platform so will be technically brilliant but not robust enough for serious prolonged off road use. Not that this will matter to the target audience for the new model.

Just like the D3 platform was never going to be as rugged as the D2 one? Big call saying that the engineering of the D5 isn't going to stand up to its intended use....
