I recently changed my insurance over to them. Not only have they placed the market value on my D2 at $500 more than I paid for it and I have owned it for about four years, I have an extra 9K for accessories, I think about 2K for personal effects, but also $1500 for recovery costs.

Now if I had been in the same situation as the OP, I could have arranged for commercial recovery, which I reckon wouldn't cost more than $1500 in this case.

The total cost for this insurance was only about $50 more than what I was paying elsewhere and this included windscreen insurance, which I did not have with the previous cover.

The vehicle is covered anywhere in Australia, providing if an incident happens I am in a legal location/track.

I have also insured my recently purchased Tvan with them.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Dave,
Be careful with this market value thing, they might have given you $500 more , but next year it will decrease. I prefer AGREED value, at least you know what your going to get and not be surprised on market value with lots of depreciation if you make a claim.

    Regards, Mario

Yes, but let us keep that a secret, and let the newbies make their own mind up.

    Interesting post you've made.
I am with RACV Total Care. I'm about to renew it, and I will. It has helped me on many occasions. Even the night I got bogged in suburbia (Roxburgh Park) on a suburban street where two vehicles could just pass if they were small passenger cars and there were no other vehicles parked in the street. The tow truck took up most of the available width.
However, what you describe, Dave, is a different circumstance. Your insurance covers accidents, not breakdowns. Total Care covers breakdowns, not accidents, as I found out recently. The towing cost me $400 even though I had Total Care.
Wardy's incident was a breakdown. RACV accident insurance would not have covered it because it was not a breakdown (unless they include Total Care as part of the insurance policy).

To those looking at cancelling their policies, what do you intend to replace them with?

Do put a different slant on it, I'll tell you about my experience with RACQ Ultimate Care.

Did a clutch outside of Bega not long after getting back on the bitumen - luckily just after exiting a pretty steep dirt track. Despite the kind assistance of Tank and VNX205 (AULRO assist to the fore yet again!), we failed to proceed.

To cut a long story short, RACQ arranged a tow to Bega and accommodation over night. They offered various options. The one I chose was to get the family of 4 transported to Canberra by bus, then a train to Sydney, then overnight accommodation in Sydney. They offered to train us back to Brisbane, but I opted for a hire care, of which they contributed the equivalent of the train fares. Also included was transport for the Defender back to MR Automotive.

All of this didn't cost me a cent. I reckon total cost would have easily been into 4 figures. This cover costs me ~$250/year (due to membership type/time).

Now, I understand it might have been a different story had I have broken down at the bottom of the dirt incline. I still wonder what the outcome might have been...

However, if you're able to get yourself back onto bitumen (or whatever conditions you're covered for), I still believe this cover is excellent value for money and peace of mind. Until someone shows me a better option, I'll be sticking with RACQ Ultimate Care.

I do understand and agree that changing terms and conditions of cover un-announced or agreed upon is unfair (and probably illegal), so would be very surprised and disappointed if that is actually what RACV have done. Also, disappointing that a service that was previously good value for money no longer exists, but hey, that's the way things go sometimes, and I'm sure RACV have there reasons (probably $). At least it's not compulsory!

It was still an unsealed road where the tilt tray picked you up.

So it was! Thanks for the reminder

I honestly find it hard to believe that RACV don't include dirt roads in their policy, and if correct, think another provider will quickly fill that vacuum.

While it was an RACV policy the actual service vehicle was probably NRMA which do pick up on dirt reads and tracks as long as they are accessible in 2wd - the job is just passed through to the relevant auto club in the State where the breakdown has occured.
