It can be a useful tool, has gotten me some work, a few interviews and some decent contacts, but also a lot of wannabes that just want to use your contacts.

As with any social networking you have to make sure that you have the right profile privacy settings. Historically (have not checked recently) you by default shared your contacts with your connections.

Some people think they're being scammed by receiving an invite to join LinkedIn. It accesses (if you allow in settings) your address book and lets you connect to others already on LinkedIn or send an invite to join to those in your contacts that aren't on it.Good industry tool and for checking on candidates for jobs.
