I love these sort of comments. While there are some differences around the country, in Melbourne at least and I'm sure plenty of other places around the country BP, Caltex, Mobil and all the independents Diesel comes out of the same place and is identical. Vortex and other 'premium' diesels get a squirt of defoamer into the tanker before the fill begins.

80% of Melbournes entire diesel supply comes from one depot. With the closure of refineries around the country this trend is also being repeated elsewhere.

Caltex fuel is Mobil fuel - Caltex don't run a refinery in Australia. Mobil don't care that they don't have many servos with their branding as they are one of only 2 companies still refining here in Vic, and sell most of their fuel to other retailers anyway...

It would also show up the fact that you need to burn a lot more ethanol to make the same power as petrol.

That is a relief!

I was beginning to think I must have only owned dud vehicles that couldn't tell when I had fed them a different brand of fuel.

None of the vehicles I have owned since about 1966 have performed differently, sounded different, or given different economy when I used a different brand of fuel.

I used to record every drop of petrol and I still record the diesel and the consumption is remarkable consistent. The occasional variation is always the result of some obvious variation in the amount of stop/start driving, amount of time spent in low range, or strong head or tail winds.

I get variations on the same brand when driving conditions vary, but get the same consumption on different brands if the conditions are the same. That must be the fault of my choice of vehicles.

Maybe I need to invest in a more modern vehicle or one that can tell what brand of fuel it is using.

Many years ago, our local fuel supplier tried to get us to switch to a new 'premium' diesel on the prime power gensets I was maintaining at the time. We used around 30,000 litres per month. They gave us 2 full batches at the same price as standard and promised us we would see an improvement in economy. After putting over 50,000 litres of the stuff through the gensets, I ran the fuel burn to KWH produced - it was identical - and I mean EXACTLY the same. .

It's simply a marketing ploy - they say it runs 'cleaner' and will clean away deposits left from 'poorer quality' fuels. I always counter this with 'what, you've been supplying me sub standard fuel?' No, no, no! they will answer, but they have no other comeback.

Its called Cognitive Dissonance or the Placebo Effect - the need to justify to ones self that you have made the right decision.

Certainly in the medical area no problem with that with some proven results and I guess if you think one fuel is better than an other there is no issue as well.

If you want to give the arsehole fuel companies even more of your hard earned so you feel good about it, then yes, be my guest.
