It is probably easier (but riskier) to start by cranking. Starting by doing four compressions with full choke to prime it, stop just past TDC and then start by switching on battery ignition (note three position switch, battery, off, magneto) and advancing the spark was a common low effort method of starting in that era. Worked with any car fitted with both battery and magneto ignition, including Rolls Royce and Ford (the latter is the one I am familiar with!).
