A friends father replaced his Jaguar with a Disco when they were first released. Very happy until it kept breaking down. Not sure what went on but had deep pockets and bought the vacant land opposite the dealership to display vehicle with notices to say what thought of it and the manufacturer

Friend of mine ( no longer with us) bought a new Disco also when they first came out , at 13 months with low mileage the cam belt broke & destroyed the engine . Dealer wouldn't do anything for him so sent Email to LR UK stating he had every Rover car from 1949 up to a 1970 SD1 , he never traded his Rovers just kept them in perfect running order & registered either on full & Club rego.
Within 24hrs the dealer was on his doorstep with a tilt tray & a RR to drive until the Disco was fixed no charge.

So we have been working on the S1,and it appears the arms on the steering relay have not been set up correctly.
The steering was always good one way but not 100% the other.

A check of the S3 manual, we have, as well,as the S1 manual, confirmed this,as the set up is very similar.

Looking at the logbooks for the vehicle, the relay box was rebuit at Solihill,in 1962,with a few other repairs.
Many years ago we also found the front springs were fitted incorrectly, and turned them around, they had been replaced at the same time.

So seems back in the day, even when vehicles were very simple, compared to today, there were also incompetent mechanics around....

Not just in the Motor trade either, eh?

I had similar on my 2A. Think thinks thinks...... [Thought Bubble.] Ah yes, it was the Steering Damper Clamp on the arm movement that was restricting it & when rectified it (the vehicle) could turn itself inside out.

Which was a bit weird as it had been Pinned into that position to stop it moving/sliding I guess. When & why
had it been done? No idea, but done it was. Full movement in both directions to the stops was fine after it's removal & no reason could be seen for the Pinning. It was just set up wrong I suppose. Ho Hum.

SPRINGS? You had SPRINGS? When I was a wee lad we had two bits of cut Mallee & some Galv. Fencing Wire, not arty farty springs to ride on.

The early steering dampers that clamp onto the drag link were supposed to have a pin through the clamp - it is not an extra. I suspect that it was fitted by a dealer.

Series Landrovers came as standard without a steering damper, relying for damping on the swivels and relay, and the damper was only an advantage if driving on very rough roads. However, as jap four wheel drives started to appear in the sixties, all with necessary dampers, more and more landrovers were fitted with them - after all, what dealer can resist selling accessories given a chance? By Series 3 production I'm pretty certain the Sydney factory was fitting steering dampers as a standard fitting, and I'm pretty certain they were fitted to all Australian military production.

Thanks John for that snippet of interesting info.
Mine is a '66 SWB so who can say?????
Anything seems to be possible with rebuilds etc so it could have come from another vehicle's salvage.

I think it may have been in the clamp but unsure this far on. Thing is, it did not improve the steering set up but hindered it.
Cannot recall whether it was the Left or Right side that improved, Left, something is telling me.
