    If the Pipers River in the advertisement is the one I am thinking of, then that is very likely a vineyard selling off some empty containers that had the cleaning solution used in the storage vessels and piping of the winery.
    Yep, cleaning product used in the beverage industry.

    Containers that have held NaOH are suitable for drinking water, as long as they have been well rinsed. This is the essential component of your dishwasher detergent, and you eat off and drink out of stuff that has had that all over it. The stuff is highly soluble in water, so rinses easily and completely.

    There are lots of other things that come in those sort of tanks that I would not want to drink out of afterwards, no matter how well they were rinsed!
