Have a read of any account of the opening of the Liverpool to Manchester railway (where the trials were carried out just not long the line was opened). During the formal opening the Rocket ran over and killed the local Member (of the Commons), and on arrival at Manchester of the first trainload of surviving VIPs (the most important being the deeply unpopular in Manchester Duke of Wellington), it was greeted by a riot, whereupon the VIPs did not alight, but stayed on the train and returned to Liverpool, where there was a formal celebratory dinner, somewhat dampened by the death of one of the planned principal speakers.
That do you for chaos?
