There is a certain resemblance. In more ways than one.

The observant viewer may notice Saitch's Discovery 3, to the left of shot, just out of sight.
Do you know the date/circa, the photo was taken, Steve? I'm guessing interwar years, mid thirties.

Late one evening, Los Angeles Centre received a request for clearance to FL600 (60,000 ft). The incredulous controller, with obvious disdain in his voice, responded "How do you plan to get up to 60,000 feet?

The Blackbird crew responded, "We don't plan to go up to it, we plan to descend to it."

Their clearance was promptly issued without further delay.

Some of the interactions between ATC and SR-71 crews are legendary.

Well worth watching - Brian is a funny guy and tells the stories of his flying days in the SR-71 very well. If you have some spare cash get a copy of 'Sled Driver' - it's not cheap and with Brian's passing earlier this year, they have gone up and there's been one final print run.

If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

That was a really intersting video.

Have a look at this. It looks real and the speeds look realistic, too.
