The audio file arrived today. I have amateurishly chucked this together. I don't think any of the images are copyright. Out of respect to the Beadell family I have limited this to people who use the link, iow it's not public. Not that anyone watches anything I post....

If you want an example of the laid back, dry and laconic humour Australia used to be famous for, look no further.

Thank You Tins, it was a pleasure to sit and listen to the Great Man, who most of his life, worked out beyond the last Traffic Light. (And wrote some good books)
Unfortunately we are losing our genuine Australian characters to political correctness nowadays.
    Keep up the good work
    regards

Spot on, Harry. Most of the stuff I love from back then wouldn't even get published these days, as it would cause some galah to take offence.

My late father was in the Burwood scout group with Len Beadell under the leadership of Scoutmaster John Richmond and accompanied them on a number of their weekend 'survey' trips to the Blue Mountains.

There's a bit more about Len's life in the following article, 'LINE IN THE SAND' which gives a bit more understanding of the man....

There are a couple of recent YouTube videos; in one he explains about using a theodolite. I remember somebody posting a long time ago about seeing a copy of his calculations. Very similar to usng a sextant at sea.

Navigation without GPS using a Theodolite and star charts (Len Beadell) (youtube.com)

Same as we used in the Simpson in the mid sixties, and same as my brother used in Antarctica in 1970.

Looks cool. Takes away some of the "challenges" that give series ownership its charm..

I don't remember ever overtaking anything in my 109. Well, maybe a tractor once, but it was a near thing.
