What are these then military guys?

Hi all - the father in law found three of these in a clearing sale. Of course he bought them but doesn't know what they are What are these then military guys? . The story is that they were used to store salted mutton in ww2. Does anyone know if this is true? Or if not what they are and what they were used for?

The lids kinda lock down and seal and they look to be insulated. No outlets at the base though so not for hot water.

They look a lot like 40/60 bofors ammunition boxes - but is over 40 years since I used them - well some sort of large calibre ammunition anyway.

Thanks Garrycol! I googled it and indeed you are on the money. Found a full one for sale which shows how they were packed.
