Well it seems that our other son Brendon, the one just came back from Japan wants a car. As he will be 21 on the 1/3, he doesn't need the hours to get his licence. But he needs a car to do some more practice before he goes for the test. He will not drive the Disco2 or the Range Rover he said they are to big for him. He could drive the Kia but Kristopher is hardly home for Brendon to get the car. Has been driving before he went to Japan. So the hunt is on again. Looking at a Kia 2007 sport,has all the airbags front and side, but the car yard are not back until next week. So here we go again. Heather

AT RESTBob, he did make up his mind, he bought a Kia Rio sports today.
We have loaned him some of the money towards it, he will pay us back, an interest free loan. but what is wrong with helping out your family, if you are able to, it's not a gift, they are repaying the car loans.

AT RESTIn Victoria they are not allowed to drive V8s. Our D2 is a V8, if it was a TD5 then it would be ok.Heather, why is a D2 "too big" ?
In my humble opinion.... if a D2 is too big... he's not ready to get on the road.... they have to be one of the easiest vehicles to drive around!
My daughter did at least 1/2 her hours in my D2 and the rest in a little manual Astra we have.... The son is just about finished his hours spread mainly between the Astra and my D4...
The more variation in experience they can get on the road before they get their license the safer they will be in my view.
That includes, type of traffic, type of vehicle, type of weather, time of day, type of road.... you have to throw the lot at them them to give the experience they need....
Mind you that storm we had here in Melbourne 2 weeks back was interesting in the D4 with L plates.... Glad I wasn't in the Astra!

SupporterI've got another 4 years before I need to worry about this. The only "P" plate "friendly" vehicles I have here are a 1952 Traction Avant and a 1963 Citroen ID19.
the wifes car a poogoe 407 is a "turbo" .... turbo diesel mind you so "to powerful". My land rovers are V8's ... so "to powerful" ... my old Citroen CX is a turbo ... so "to fast".
She will drive each and every single one of them on her "L" plates. A variety of a cars and conditions to learn in is best IMO.
Gee's ... a bloody Kia though. I'd have threatened to stick it into a tree if my parents wanted me to get something so tediously boring.
I'd look for something like a Renault Clio sport or 206 GTi180 ... or similar ( after all, "Dad" is going to need to drive it sometimes).

SupporterI consider those very safe vehicles. Think the last of the aussie made cars. Staggeringly powerful 6's ..... RWD .... fully 'P' plate legal

I learnt to drive in (& it was also my first car) a 302, V8, XT Falcon Ute.
I really learnt how to control wild oversteer in that thing! How times have changed?
I think I only had my L license for 6 weeks?

PS Also learnt how to do a Burn Out in Top (3rd) gear!!
I learnt to drive in a Mini 850 and I still managed to put it backwards into a bank!

Yes, it was fun.
It was a bit disconcerting though when you would be driving along and suddenly a door handle would fall off and hit the floor.
