Tell the Millenial Snowflake to drive what is offered or go without!
Well it seems that our other son Brendon, the one just came back from Japan wants a car. As he will be 21 on the 1/3, he doesn't need the hours to get his licence. But he needs a car to do some more practice before he goes for the test. He will not drive the Disco2 or the Range Rover he said they are to big for him. He could drive the Kia but Kristopher is hardly home for Brendon to get the car. Has been driving before he went to Japan. So the hunt is on again. Looking at a Kia 2007 sport, has all the airbags front and side, but the car yard are not back until next week. So here we go again. Heather![]()

I'm hoping that HE's paying for it....
in which case, pick a top-notch dealer...and let the Precious One buy from him !
Seriously, a dealer warranty is LOTS better than a private-sale... "warranty".
My #2 son bought privately, paid around $1,000 to $1500 less than the 'same' car from a cheap dealer.
Took 6 months for us to discover the water-leak into the cabin... minimum of dash-board removal, possibly fender etc as well. - Well known weakness in his model, sealed seam becomes UN-sealed from body twisting, like minor bingle.
- The few chips of toughened glass on the floor should have given the game away, but...
Son #2 just might have learned a $5k lesson...![]()
With limited money he would be looking at an older car, here in Vic if a car is over 10 years old then you get no statuary warranty! We are now in 2017 so vehicle would have to be 2008 build, and avail money is going to be harder to find something.
From consumer affairs dept Vic.
What is a used car statutory warranty?
A licensed motor car trader must provide a statutory warranty if the car:
- is less than 10 years old, and
 - has travelled less than 160,000 kilometres.

Note: the car's age is determined by the date stamped on its build plate, usually found on the firewall between the engine and passenger compartment
Can't really compare as our son is autistic but to make sure he would be safe on the road we got him to learn in a variety of cars. The first one he ever drove was a 98 NL fairlane. Now he's a tradesman and has to take a ute and trailer into difficult places so the initial spatial awareness training did help.
Maybe practice in both the Disco and the Range Rover as well as in a small car?
I nearly took out a peloton of cyclists learning to drive in a 100 series landcruiser.
Totally worth it.

Heather, why is a D2 "too big" ?
In my humble opinion.... if a D2 is too big... he's not ready to get on the road.... they have to be one of the easiest vehicles to drive around!
My daughter did at least 1/2 her hours in my D2 and the rest in a little manual Astra we have.... The son is just about finished his hours spread mainly between the Astra and my D4...
The more variation in experience they can get on the road before they get their license the safer they will be in my view.
That includes, type of traffic, type of vehicle, type of weather, time of day, type of road.... you have to throw the lot at them them to give the experience they need....
Mind you that storm we had here in Melbourne 2 weeks back was interesting in the D4 with L plates.... Glad I wasn't in the Astra!

Well it has a 2' lift and he is at uni still. So need something that is better on the fuel (V8). As he only get youth allowance need something that is cheap to run. And he is paying us back for his car as well. I know when I drove the Range rover it is bigger, and you feel like you are driving a tank. And I have driven the Disco. I have driven a few different cars, and I have been driving for 35 years. I can see where Brendon is coming from. He just needs a small car to go to his friends place and some of those roads you can not swing a cat in, so small it better for him. Heather![]()
Corolla, Mazda 2, Honda Jazz or something similar would be my recommendation. Fix any mechanicals, thorough service and ignore the interior.
