I still have two rolls of gasket paper on the shelf, every now and then they get pulled out for a hand made gasket. Not that they are a work of art or anything but they do stop the fluids migrating onto the pavement.![]()
Having a bit of time to ponder and tinker of late due to a injury .
I have spent a bit of time in the shed trying to pass the time even tho i cant do heavy stuff or major jobs that involve standing
I have been catching up all manner of those i`ll get around to it little jobs
So one of these jobs was to make some gaskets for one of those jobs when im capable again in the future.
I learnt how to make gaskets as a kid from my dad , Now if im doing a job and and what ever the part is and it comes with a gasket im happy with that.
I am talking about when you pull something apart to repair or what everAs we here own not your run of the mill car making gaskets and parts hard to source in a flash at times.
So i got to thinking who makes their own gaskets these days and is it one of those old time art`s that is slowly disappearing![]()

I still make paper gaskets for my bikes, actually just made 3 manifold gaskets for the H2 for when I replace the original carbie manifolds, didn't take long at all, basically I got sick of trimming bought gaskets to suit, so figured why not make my own, it's not really that hard to do.

Making gaskets is a regular part of my work. Where I am now working the gaskets are on the larger side of big. It is one of the jobs that a ball peen hammer is still needed. Permatex is applied with a three inch paint brush and or a three inch or so scraper.

I try to have gaskets I expect to need on hand - but if I don't have a needed one, usually because I wasn't expecting to pull that bit apart, I make one. Usually I can't have the vehicle off the road, and Landrover parts are not readily available in town, and my mail service almost guarantees that if I get it by mail order we are looking at a minimum of a week!
I have been making gaskets on and off for about sixty years.

hmm, ok I'm ok don't panic,,,
Now I can see things again,,, I have to make heaps of gaskets at work, and that's because there are none that can be bought. Ours are cork, but we can also do the paper ones. I ended up making a template for them, so much quicker.
I haven't used a ball-peen for a while, but we used to for pipeline work a fair bit.
Its just all about making stuff really![]()
