You always have to be careful when not using a gasket. That gasket that you may think you could do with out could just be needed. The thickness of the gasket is taken into account when a part was originally fitted. Case in point. At work they decided to not use a gasket and only use the the sealant. Was on a bearing cap that also seats the bearing home. No gasket resulted in a gap of .7 mm, so now we have to machine the cap down to suit as there is to much pressure on the bearing and the gap is too much for the sealant. Worst material I had to make a gasket from was some Klingerit which is reinforced with wire. Not so easy with a hole punch. Geeze how how did I remember that ? I think I have just sprained a couple of brain cells now.

I've actually used a paper gasket to get the hearing preload correct when rebuilding an LT230.
It was a late model version that originally only used sealant.

And FWIW I prefer the old OE paper gaskets on Deefer drive flanges.
Things come apart cleanly, no laborious scraping of bloody RTV silicon when taking apart, with no leaks in operation if the surfaces are clean and true.

    Ditto.

Did the medial ligaments in both ankles twelve months apart in my late teens, IIRC it was six weeks before i was out of a cast.

Ligament (and tendon) injuries are crap.

Still make a few every now and then (at work as well as home). Hour and a half round trip to town for something as simple as a thermostat gasket, so its just as easy to tap one out. Few bits of short hydraulic tube with the end sharpened up n the toolbox for hole punches.

With some of the old/odd bits of gear we see at work, buying the required gasket off the shelf is not an option......

Its handy to be able to make your own

I have two rolls off different gasket paper that I keep and a ball pane hammer along with a very fine bladed knife that come in handy at times. At times I would be lost not having the ability to make my own gasket
