Well, if I could choose one, it would be the Scania V8 diesel that wins my vote! A decision made purely on the sound it makes!! Magic!!

As someone who has done over 400,000 km in a Scania R730, I'm with you. The times I had... Nothing came near it, This became obvious carrying cotton, Anyone who has done that will know, you get weighed and that's it. The Scania would pull the skins off the other trucks. On the hill out of Coonabararbran I could take any truck out there.
I hate the whole 'my truck is bigger than your truck' stuff. But, hey, that Scania is seriously sick. Wanted it to have an open exhaust, but I reckon that would get old real fast.
Thing is, in the real world, Scania rules. But their gearboxes suck.

Well if we are talking big diesels....the Detroit two-stroke 6V71, 8V92 etc, must take the cake for longevity. Used in trucks, buses, construction equipment, military machinery....for many years....and you struggled to kill them....oil leaks, coolant leaks...but they kept on going. And they sounded pretty good with any sort of pipes!
Oh, you could kill them. Saw one run away once, in a big mobile compressor powering an air track drill.. Scary stuff. Ran on it's own oil when the fuel was shut off.
In the Army, doing tune ups on M113A1 APCs, the tune up sequence was attached to a thick, aluminium clipboard, the idea being if it started to run away you could slam the clipboard over the air intake to starve it. Watch your fingers!
