    query re potential discovery owner

Howdy! I am looking at buying a disco - 1997 turbo diesel, and was wondering if anyone had an idea regarding fuel efficiency (or in-efficiency as the case may be). My dream car is actually a Defender 90, but they are rarer than hens teeth, so I guess this is the next best thing.

Also, were they standard with an LSD? I know some were, but I cant remember which model that was...

The fuel efficiency question is only for interest, unless my Mrs is around, when it then becomes quite important!

    Cheers,

    Disco fuel usage.

    Hi Piglet.
I had a 1996 300 Tdi and it did at least 700klms to a tank full. Bit sluggish when towing a van weighing 1.5 tonnes or so and consumption increased quite a bit especially when pushing against head winds.
It's important you check that the timing belt has been changed and other servicing done on a regular basis.
Personally I think you should buy a 110 but then I'm biased as I have one!
    Cheers.

fuel usage is slightly better since the tweak i reckon, esp when pulling the campertrailer, which is where the power increase is really noticeable.

after feeling the power increase i was sure fuel usage would be heavier, that hasnt been the case, i am pretty impressed i have to admit.

i went to yallakool at bjelke-peterson dam and the journey there and back was hard and hot. the disco took it all in it's stride, loaded to the tilt, camper trailer, aircon, and charging 2 extra batteries. Had no trouble holding 80kph thru the hilly sections, that wasnt the case before the tweak.

luv to dyno it and see what the measured differences are but santa escaped with all my spare cash the mongrel

I get an average of around 10L/100km in mine, even less when i drive conservatively, ie not changing down gears to maintain 100km/h on the highway up hills etc. Around town or city driving you could expect about 12L/100km at worst i'd say, unless you feel the need to take of as quick as you can at every set of lights.

As for the limited slip diff, i wasnt away and disco had one, doesnt the LSD interfere with the constant four wheel drive?

As Alan said, if you want a 90, why not compromise and get a 110, its still a defender afterall. Matt

before the tweek i was getting around the 10L/100km give or take a bit, i have recorded the last four refills since the simpson trip as i new i was towing the van over xmas and wanted to see how it effected the fuel consumption. here are my latest figures over the last couple of months. would have good for mine to have stayed the same or slightly better. happy enought with the extra power for a little more fuel.

it was a killer driving home, it was cooler with the ac off and the window down, am going to try fiting perspex or plasic to the cargo barrier to hopefull kee the cool air in the front half.

The Disco was never delivered with an LSD - it wasn't even an option.

Thats what i thought, isnt it because the constant 4wd wont work with it, doesnt having the LSD cause transmission wind up? Matt

well, I could have sworn they were advertising it at one stage... oh well, thankyou all for your keen input...

sounds exciting - however, the one I was interested in is gone... there was a '94 disco... going for a test drive tomorrow...

maybe I'll get it... a mate is trying to talk me out of it - on the plus side, he sells cars and can get me a newer beast at a good price.

cheers again, I enjoy reading your comments
