Back in 1930, they raced them. Against, amongst others, the Germans. The Mercs also had superchargers but better ones than the English.
So, the English ran some naturally aspirated Bentleys in the race.
So,the race started and one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! The Bentley's motor went. Then another one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! That Bentley's motor went. So, another one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! That Bentley's motor went.
So, this went on all through the race. By the last few laps all the supercharged Bentleys were either out of the race or very shagged. The Mercs were pretty shagged to. No match for the unstressed naturally aspirated Bentleys.
    Bentley won the race.
I love that story. That is why I'd love a 1930 Bentley. Supercharged, of course. Rarity does come into it.

Bentley 4.5litre Blower Open Tourer 1928 for sale - PreWarCar

A friend of a family friend had one. He sold it to someone in the UK for $1mil. It was about the time when The Flying Scottsman was out here. He got a photo of it with the train at the North Melbourne yards before it was loaded into the container.
I wonder how much it will be worth now?
Last year I was returning from Yass, and around Cudal I spotted a strange looking car ahead of me. I eventually caught up with it and passed it between Molong and Wellington, and as I passed it I was able to identify it as one of these, although I was not able to get a good enough look to be sure whether it was blown or not, I think not. Could have been either a 4.5 or a 3.5. He was travelling well, but at about 95km/h, The thing that struck me was how high the big steering wheel is set - the driver was virtually looking through it.

I could live with that, Jerry. I'll have to dust off my Beta and 8-Track cassettes.

SENSATIONAL video on the Bentley "Barn Find",...what a car, one of the best short clips I've seen. And ya know what, the owner of that car would easily get his money back. As we used to say, "Damn Fine Machinery."
Didn't have time to watch the Tim Birkin u tube, but I know all about him,...those boys lived, & drove, in a great era.
    Thanks, Pickles.
NB: Forgot to mention, if you or anyone else is into this sort of stuff, old/vintage/classic/road/race cars/drivers etc, do any of you read the U.K. "Octane" magazine. Available monthly here, nearly 300pages, only $10.50,...takes me ages to read it. There is some REALLY good stuff in it....just remembered, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Editor owns an early Landrover, can't remember which one, .....and the Deputy Editor, Mark Dixon, who also writes in LandRover Monthly, owns several.

You could say that, I had an Austin Cambridge/Freeway, got it from a workmate I worked with at BHP Newcastle, at the time I thought it was a great car, heaps better than my best mates EK Holden
