I didn't see the report personally but apparently Main Roads WA is thinking of closing all overtaking lanes on high usage weekends (read Easter etc.) in an effort to try to curb drivers racing past those holding them up!
What the heck are the lanes there for if it's not for letting others go past slower traffic?
We had classic situation coming down from about Geraldton a week ago. Got through to Jurien with no problems then find ourselves behind a small camper van stuck behind a large van towed by a LC 200.
This bloke in the 110 limit, (100 for ALL towing vehicles) never went over 94kph and whenever an advisory sign at a long bend said 90kph he immediately dropped to the mid 60s!!!
The turkey behind him had no idea which made the distance to overtake safely even longer but then he decided to do it but wouldn't dare exceed the limit and took so long to get past it was highly dangerous. Once past he took his foot off the throttle and just sat in front of the van and LC.
Eventually I booted the D4 and got past the van and the camper by exceeding the limit by quite a bit but as I was taught "Overtake as quickly as possible and return to the LH side of the road when safe to do so".
Don't think that would carry much weight with the idiots like Main Roads/cops/road safety theorisers who think all speed above walking pace is dangerous but that's the best way of doing it.
What the hell do they think closing off the overtaking lanes which is quite often the only chance of getting past idiots is going to do for driver behaviour on the roads?

Having lived in Perth and moved to Victoria in last two years I hear you. One thing that ****s me here is right hand lane hogs that won't overtake and do 10 under the limit or deliberately slow you down and stuff traffic flow. Pro Tip: East link in the morning, the left most lane is the fastest flowing and less utilised. Despite the constant reminders about keeping left unless over taking.
The reason this really irks me, is when I get a page to turn out to a fire call and some douchebag decides to deliberately slow down in front of me. I'm not speeding, just getting there as quick as I can. I've had clowns brake check me right up to the fire station. ****ing ridiculous. Then again the people that don't get out the way of an appliance on code1 is ludicrous.

ATH, Brand highway/Grt Northern highway, is a nightmare...

I was heading to Perth from the North, got stuck behind a Rav4, just after bullsbrook. Rav slow in single lane, about 60 - 70. In overtaking lane it was just above speed limit.

This continued all the way past Yagen bridge in Upperswan.

Once I got to the over taking lane, just past Rakich's store, I run upto 80-85 and paced them while slowly gaining ahead.

The Rav tried to force me to let them in, but as my bullbar was a good 5 metres ahead of them, I ignored them and kept going at a few k's over the limit..

Once I turned onto Roe highway, this Rav came up my drivers side and the snotty bi&^% told me that trucks are not allowed to overtake and must travel 20k's below the speed limit.

Sadly, I was in too much shock to do anything but laugh...

Now an idea of why she was only 5 metres back from bullbar and had to slow down... I was 27.5 m long and just under a 100 Tonne... Idiot had no hope of pushing me out the way, may mess up the polish or dirty the tyres too...

In the interests of road safety, remember, you must take over to drive in the right hand lane.

I often travel on these roads and have Never had any problems with the trucks using these roads.
If I am traveling at less than 100kph and I see a truck coming up behind me I will get on chan 40 and let them know that I will be pulling up to let them through and if I am travelling at better than 100kph I will again use my radio to see if it is safe to pass (Especially if it is raining), Usually I get a "NO worries" back or I will be told that when safe to do so I will get the pass signal.
Common curtesy is alive and well in the WA trucking industry
