Two children killed in crash with B-Double on Newell Highway near Dubbo
The Newell Highway is currently closed in both directions, about ten kilometres north of Dubbo, as the result of a fatal B-double/car collision early this morning. It is expected to be closed all day.
There are detours in use, but be aware of congestion and allow extra time. Northbound traffic is being diverted at Brocklehurst, and southbound apparently at Eumungerie.

Looking at the pictures, it seems as if the truck hit the back of the car from the side, presumably as it dodged. It looks as if it was on a crest - I wonder which driver was on the wrong side?
And why - at that time of day, asleep is the obvious answer, but there could have been other reasons.
The three kids were presumably in the back, in most accidents the safest location. I wonder if the five year old survived because he was the only one in a child seat?

Sadly That 3.am time period is the most dangerous, this is went sleep factor starts to roll in when driving in the dark hours. I have fallen asleep for a second behind the wheel on a country highway in my younger days when I was 18 , it was after a night shift, it was on a bend, I woke a split second later and was doing 360s and ended up in a ditch, I am lucky to be alive to tell the story and luckily there was no other road user involved.
Sadly, you are absolutely correct. Where my road comes out onto the bitumen there is a large, solid tree about 10m off the bitumen - decorated with a cross and various other mementoes. Same as your experience by the marks and the news reports at the time except there is no ditch there, but a tree. Two dead. Particularly in areas with trees (or light posts!) it does not need another road user.
