I am a mechanic. Every Falcon and Territory I work on is rusty, if you know where to look. And I see plenty of talk about it on car forums I frequent.

Me too, but that doesn't change the fact that they are a comfortable, economical and brisk milemaker.

I'm with you. I have had many Fords, the most remarkable being the ex cab, the most notable being the ex police interceptor XA. Every one of them, from the XT Fairmont, through the XY panel van, via the XA, the XE ESP ( god, I wish I still had that! ), two EFs and now the BA, has been reliable, basically comfortable, easy to repair, mechanically basically bulletproof, cheap to insure and parts, if needed, are available everywhere. Sure, the trim is a bit naff, but no more so than a Commodore. The Falcon and it's variants, and the Commodore and it's, were victim to economies of scale, nothing else.

Sorry, but calling yourself a mechanic lends no weight to your position. I, too, am a qualified mech. I choose not to work in that field anymore, but my opinion is worth as much as yours. I prefer to talk to the panel trade when it comes to rust. I'm just not hearing it. Ford have built well over 100,000 of the things, not including Territory, and yet a simple Google of "BA Falcon rust" turns up very few hits, top of the list being a forum thread based in 2005/6.

I see "plenty of talk" about the unreliability of Land Rovers on the forums I frequent. So what? As I said, I'm not interested in hearsay. Documented evidence is needed. If the BA was as bad as this thread suggests, Ford would have issued a recall. Any occurrence of structural rust in the first seven years since production would have assured it, as the Govt. demands it.

I repeat my opinion. The most likely cause of rust in any car built since the mid 90s is poor accident damage repair. Even in Alfa Romeos. If there is any evidence around that undamaged Fords are rusting, present it to Ford. I'll bet you get an answer.
