Began in late 2A's, supposedly to comply with ADR's of the day.
I think it was only for export models.
However Toyota's and Daihatsu's were still produced/imported with the narrow headlights up until about 1984, and Suzuki's into the late 1970's.
JD might be able to clarify the exact reason Land Rover began doing so earlier that the other vehicle manufacturers.

    Cheers, Mick.

Im not sure but i think it was coz the headlights werent visible from the side, (eg. about 60deg from centre) on 2a, till they first of all bolted them to the guards like bug eyes in late 68 and filled the holes in on the rad panel, then in 69 they put them in the guards like s3 was going to be. Suposedly the "bug eyed" s2a is sought after but im not seeing it...

Headlights were visible from the side on the cruisers and pootrols in the early days even tho they were inboard of the guards.

As far as i have been told anyway.

    Cheers Rod

Rod may be right, but I believe it was because the lights were closer set than others such as Landcruisers. The issue with close set lights being that an oncoming vehicle looks further away than it is.

According to Wiki, Feb '69 for the home (UK) market; late production '68/69 SIIa to comply with Australian, American and Dutch lighting regs. Lights remained in this position for SIII.
