 Began in late 2A's, supposedly to comply with ADR's of the day. 
I think it was only for export models.
However Toyota's and Daihatsu's were still produced/imported with the narrow headlights up until about 1984, and Suzuki's into the late 1970's.
JD might be able to clarify the exact reason Land Rover began doing so earlier that the other vehicle manufacturers.
