I was reading that it is possible to have the output of the inverter connected to the load side of a standard meter so you benefit from your panel output without the need of a smart meter. Has anyone done that?

With spinning disc meters this was perfect. With standard electronic meters I believe the problem is that you will be charged for the kW that flow out of your residence as the meter can't tell which way the current is flowing. So you would only connect the solar panels when your domestic load can mop up the panel output. I'd be doing it properly with an import/export meter when available.
