    Is it rocket science?

I just saw the below item on the news. I was shocked that nobody on scene had any idea how to stop or prevent further movement. How many lay people here would be able to? I could, could you?

Train drags car carrying two injured people along tracks

That's exactly what I was thinking, trains have a single airline connected between each wagon with a glad-hand couplings. Undoing the airline without closing the supply sets of an alarm in the loco.

Many people wouldn't be aware of this, The only reason I know about it is because I used to be involved in unloading iron ore trains at Dampier in another life.

Anyone who's driven trucks should be aware.

Communication seems to be the last resort, Ian. Plenty of onlookers who could have run to the driver to say DON"T MOVE!

That said, it's of course hard to be clear about the circs. It was a long train. Maybe it was shunting, and maybe the driver was completely unaware that the drunk had driven under his train. Hard to know how long the car had been there, though. Might have just happened. Could be that the poor cop was first on the scene. It was Texas, after all.

It also locks up every single carriage in the train, Pretty hard for the loco to move with that many handbrakes on

Ah. See where you are coming from. Hard to see how many people would know that though.

I don't think it was shunting, it was stopped across the road when the car hit it. I think the cop was alone when he came across it. He was trying to extract two occupants when the train started to move. Don't they teach DRABC in the States?

The alarm is instant, the brakes only apply as the pressure drops, that can be quite a while if there are a lot of wagons to the supply.
