Negotiation theory is an interesting topic- there's quite a few concepts in how it all works, and the winner is the person who can manipulate it all to their benefit, and see thru the bulldust that is thrown around while doing the dance.

One thing to keep in mind is that buyers and sellers have fundamentally different goals! Understand this, and you can make it work for you.

The negotiation starting point is where the bidding starts - might be your $99,000 OBO Toyota camry- (there just might be someone stupid enough to pay that!) or your starting bid of $10 for a widget with an unknown reserve.
Realistically both the buyer and seller have a target point- what they actually want to get- obviously seller wants a high price, buyer a low one. The seller could consider this his reserve price.
The seller and buyer both have a resistance point- the 'bottom (or top!) line' where they will not take a penny less (or more). Probably more applicable for traditional face to face negotiation for a car, a pay rise, etc.
Where these resistance points overlap is your bargaining range- the settlement point, if reached, lives within this.

Sometimes when you have no overlap in your bargaining range, you just need to call it for what it is- 'sorry mate, unless you can raise your offer, we won't be able to make a deal'. I've found when you are open and honest, and the buyer is fair dinkum about buying, you can bring them around- as long as your settlement point is realistic (ie I'll take no less than $80K for that Camry)

When potential buyers start throwing in 'trade' items, you need to understand people will generally trade what is cheap to them, but valuable to the opponent. If you don't value it, it ain't work squat. A good tactic is to use 'if' and 'then' conditions when they arise- If you offer your ****ty chinese quad bike plus a VL diff and a fishtank for the car, then I'll take $300 off my asking price of $X. This helps to solidify your value of their concession, and can often diffuse the offer when what value you're willing to accept from their offer is less than what they consider it worth... What something is 'worth' and what it's value is, can be two vastly different things.

Did I mention it's an interesting topic?
    Some good advice there.
I lived in Asia for several years and got some insights into negotiating.
One rule is you never state a number unless you are prepared to accept it if the other party says 'Yes'. Just say, 'Can you do better?'
Another guideline is that a 10 percent reduction is fair, but go much beyond that and it's considered unfair.
Rather than a straight refusal it's better to ask for time.
Finally, make sure your bottom line number is actually realistic. Sellers can have very unreal ideas of what their item is actually worth. It's rarely worth what it actually cost you.

Needs to be said. I am a buyer, rather than a seller, on these forums. I guess I wasn't prepared for the great unwashed. If what I was selling was LR then I reckon that this would be my only forum. I don't agree with everyone here (!), but I do trust them.

I bought my first Disco on line. I lived in Cairns, the car was in Coburg.
The car ticked all the boxes re engine/transmission, colour, wheels, bullbar and price. It didn't have the desired CD stacker, but that wasn't a deal breaker.
I made the call and expressed my interest but said I couldn't commit before viewing.
He agreed to hold it for a couple of weeks so that I could fly down and drive back over a long weekend. A week later the seller phoned me asking if I still wanted the car, as he had a Tasmanian on the spot, prepared to hand over the cash.
I told him ,if it was what he advertised I wanted it, if it was not, to sell it to the bloke there. He told me he would keep it for me, because I phoned first.
When I got to Melbourne and saw the car, it was more than I expected. As the old bloke had knocked back a cash buyer, in favour of me, I had lost any bargaining power. I handed over the asking price and a bottle of exotic, tropical fruit wine from Murdering Point. Both parties ended up happy, a deal well done.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Only someone from Coburg would have fallen for the ' exotic, tropical fruit wine' line. Was he from Pentridge?

No John, originally from Italy. He came to Australia in 1948, cutting cane by hand in Mossman.

When I was a kid in Boy Scouts we had a Jamboree in Brisbane. The kids from Coberg Troop must have come from Pentridge, telling us their badges were worth more than ours because they came from Germany.

He doesn't have to answer on the grounds that it was prior to recorded history.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
