Have you looked at share houses to reduce your rent? Are you just one person or a family? Are you able to get a mortgage and buy?
Hi,
Moving to th Sunshine Coast. I am here until Tuesday 5th Sept.
I have Been looking at rentals.
Sitting here I am wondering if I am missing a way of moving here without throwing money away. By that I mean if I rent a place at say $460 per week it is money I never see again or get any benefit. Unlike paying a mortgage. (Yes, I understand I get the benefit of moving and living here).
I am thinking perhaps I am better off buying a caravan and a shipping container and finding some land I can rent and stay on. Caravan gives me a home....which can be moved for time away or work. The container gives me security of my property.
So, I guess I need to find somewhere that I could rent. That's were I would like some advice on being able to find this.
So,what are people's thoughts?
Chilly

Just one person but have a lot of garage stuff as well as household. Would need a job for mortgage. Home owner. Not thought of shared houses but have thought of renting out a room.
Just trying to see what I could do and maximise keeping my money
I doubt that any council will allow you to live in a caravan on a vacant block. Dispensation or a blind eye is turned for a year, while building, if proper septic/sewerage works have been completed.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
It's a nice area and there plenty of choices between the beach and the hills, so I recommend you look around and don't just rush in. Near the beach is dearest, of course.
Rather than a container there are several storage places to keep your gear. That way you can move around accommodation without having to worry about carting your gear about, until you settle.
when you say "Sunshine Coast"
where exactly do you mean ?
do you want to be near the water or in the hinterland?
it's a bloody big area with a large variance in locales
hinterland would better suit the caravan and container vision more than the coastal strip i would imagine....

Caloundra is nice area but has been settled for so long now you'd be lucky to find any vacant space.....plenty of house rentals available.
As Inc said Sunshine Coast appears to be anywhere north of Pine Rivers for the next 100km these days.
Cheaper rentals in Caloundra area have been beaten up(physically, not figuratively) by holiday makers and $450wk wouldnt get you anything.
Yes, Caloundra would be expensive. There are other areas away from the water. Nambour could be cheaper?
Chilly I've lived here for most of my life. Fantastic place, probably one of the best places to live in the world right now IMHO. You have everything from great beaches to the cooler hinterland. Surf culture, country culture, hippies, alternate lifestylers, folks with mega $$$$$ - it's all here along with the same range of prices. All the beach suburbs bring most rental $, but then some of the hinterland can also be expensive, BUT NOTHING like Sydney or Melbourne prices. However, there are also plenty of reasonably priced areas too. Doubt though, that you will be able to rent a block of land to put a caravan and container on. As disco mick suggested, maybe hire a shed for your gear, then you can put your caravan at any of the caravan parks and live right on the beach! If you do get up here, give us a yell sometime.
