    Am I Too Sensitive?

In the last Pat Callinans 4x4 magazine (issue 028) there was a great letter to the editor "Land Rover Loyal". Basically the letter was about a bloke who has been very happy with the many land rovers that he has had in the past. The editor (Scott) responded with something like "its great to hear from a Land Rover Tragic (most of them involving mechanical repairs)...." . Well that's like a red rag to a bull for me. Ive owned 5 land rovers now over the years and I have never had any sort of reliability issues. The odd repairs required from time to time but no more than you'd expect from any other type of 4x4.
Are the 4x4 mags perpetuating an untruth and misrepresenting Land Rover? On what grounds do they claim LR to be unreliable - where is the evidence?. As far as know, and from my experience they are solid reliable 4x4s that excell at there intended use.
I own a small business and I had 3 hiluxs and 2 prados - we had continual problems with them - oil leaks, gearbox overheating, tail shaft faults, recalls as wel l as faulty injectors. These are well known faults so why aren't journalists critical of Toyotas? We have since moved to colorados and our running costs have significantly dropped. I personally traded in my prado for a D4 and the difference is like chalk and cheese.
So my question is - should we be tolerating false journalism or am I just too sensitive? Should Land Rover be tolerating false statements.
I could go on rambling but i look forward to reading what others think.
    cheers

SamD from this forum writes for them. He drives an L322.

Pat used to drive a 130 - I've driven it.

Pat has commented on and chats about my L322 when I see him at our local coffee shop (fairly regularly). He has driven LR at launches and has been quite impressed with them.

During the week I was chatting with a friend (motorcyclist, not 4WD owner) who works at an ARB store. He told me of a 200 Series Cruiser that needed an engine replacement. Cost $32K drive in, drive out. Ouch!

I think you should C&P your post in a letter to the editor. Keep us informed on the response, as some of us prefer our toilet paper non-glossy and on a roll.

    Business is business.

Such Land Rover 'unreliability' issues are all based on historical broken axles and Leland electrics in the 80's.

My 1998 Defender has been awesome for 300,000km in northern Australia despite it being Toyota country. It's outlasted many a Land Cruiser and it's still going strong. Not to mention pulling many Toyotas out of a bog.

No you're not too sensitive. Toyota gained the high ground with the 60 series Land Cruiser and Land Rover never claimed it back. Toyota advertising and dealer network eclipsed Land Rover. ...but since then Land Rover have quietly improved quality, if not service agent network. All reputation rests on the new Defender. Otherwise Land Rover will be relegated to luxury pretender status, which is ironic because the 60 series won due to being 'more car like'.

    Interesting times...

I Love it that there is a perception that LR are unreliable and are incapable of doing what the Jap 4WD's can do, It makes them that much more affordable for those of us that know Better
