DPF's the end of diesel cars in cities?

There's an interesting mix of vehicles on the school run at my work.
Most are the typical suburban commuters - dented Taragos seem to be a speciality of our parents, along with old Ford and other vans.
Then there are the popular small cars such as your Yaris, various Mazdas and Fords.
There are small SUVs such as the Rav4 and similar size.
Then there are the bigger ones. Kia Sorrentoes are growing number, but we also have Rangers, Navarras, Discos, an Audi Q7, a couple of big Mercs and even a Rangie Sport.
I was surprised the other day to see two Porsches swing in the gate within minutes of each other. Logan must be rising up the social scale.
I would be surprised if more than a couple of our drivers knew about DPFs.

I think it's the diesel engine that is approaching it's end. It will soon be replaced by something else. Either powerful advanced petrol engine or electric engine.


Interesting that the used engine oil from diesels car is not carcinogenic But that from petrol engine is...

I have been driving diesels all my life...from 35hp,up to 600hp....and until this thread...first I knew of DPFs!

Or maybe get all these kids back onto buses,or walking to school.

Thats what we did in our day,a good walk a couple of k's each way didn't do anyone any harm,no matter what the weather,either to the bus stop,or to the school.

And these days kids need as much exercise as they can get.

For each bus,there would be a saving of around 20 to 30 car trips, twice a day.

That would keep the greenies happy and unclog our badly congested streets.

And run the buses on CNG,no DPF[biggrin]

Nah, it would just add buses to the car volume.

Those parents still head out each day, so their vehicles are on the road regardless.

By the same token all 4wds not used for
Work purposes could be banned.

And all trips offroad could be tour buses.

That would cut down hundreds of tyres on trails, reduce track damage, prevent bypasses being formed, and prevent the damage to & erosion of fire trails.

How does everyone feel about that? [emoji6]

For the record on DPFs though....

The All New Discovery doesn’t have DPF problems [emoji41]
It doesn’t have a DPF....

Like many trucks don’t. Most just use Adblu

And comparatively, Petrol engines if run short, not tuned correctly, can block up their CAT so not completely immune to issues.

What is really bad on Petrols is short runs where the oil dilution is greater.

That would be counter productive Because people would be taking their 2 wheel drives instead and these would chew up the tracks much worse.

Not if the area is banned to all but the buses...
Like the tracks banned to 4wds but not Horses..

Less track maintenance could leave more funding for outright policing of this hypothetical policy, leading to more revenue from potential fines for breaching the access rules..
