That D2 didn't look badly bogged,bit of a dig with the long handled shovel,lower tyre pressures,it probably would have driven out.
If someone isnt prepared to lower their tyre pressures adequately, i wouldnt bother recovering them.
And if the tyre pressures were lowered, he could drive out.
Winching is a great strategy when there isnt firm ground to tow from.
He was too close to the winch rope. The tension might seem small, but it can be enough that if something unhooks why risk anything.

What if the winch extension strap, or is that a snatch strap, comes off the towball and whips back?
Is there a hook or metal thingy with a shackle on the end of the winch rope?
Being flicked by a towel in the nads can hurt!
Winch extension straps have no stretch.
Therefore no stored energy.
So even if there is a shackle between rope and strap it would drop down, and they did have a dampening device fitted.
People have died from attaching straps to a tow bar. How heavy would that disco be? it's really a dead weight, kinetic energy doesn't have to come into it. Low range 2nd, CDL engaged, tyres 18 psi, or lower. maxtracks perhaps, that recovery should not have been necessary.
Correction Bob.. people have died from Snatch Straps or Kinetic recoveries from a Tow Ball..
In the video you could do exactly the same recovering if it had a trailer attached and recovered via the trailer... the ball would experience exactly the same type of linear, non shock loaded recovery. Just like, well, towing!
Over run brakes on a 1999kg trailer would put more shock into the ball than the above recovery.
