Your car has been spying on you, - and selling your information.

I came across this idea decades ago, when engine management computers began to appear in "everyday" cars. US Police forces quickly discovered that some ECU's stored recent information and in the event of a crash, could be downloaded and read. - Most buyers had NO idea, and car companies were in no hurry to tell them.
Fast - Forward to now...and there is nothing new under the Sun, - still being done only done more effectively.

Car companies are preparing to sell driver data to the highest bidder | Ars Technica

And you may want to follow up some of the links in this article, especially interesting is the rate of Mobile PHONE connections - by car makers. - Why indeed would automakers be watching the evolution of 5G ??? Chetan Sharma | Mobile Industry Technology and Strategy Consulting

Certain 'intelligence' can be built into current ECU's, like the infamous VW that could deduce it was being emissions-tested, and alter itself to suit. From memory, that was (?) confirmed by it's in-built GPS detecting lack of movement across the ground despite wheels turning...

Wonder what the latest SUVs are recording and up-loading.... We already know that TESLA cars can communicate directly with TESLA without the owner being aware.
    - Wonder what our brand-New Range Rover is doing...?

Comments anybody? - Big Brother is growing in ways that even George Orwell (Author, '1984') could never imagine

Probably, being spied on, is something we will have to get used to.
The D3 states in the owners manual that it records certain information which may be used in the event of an accident.

I noticed many years ago that the bank would have no trouble knowing where you at & what you are buying etc, just from where & how much you use your EFT/ATM card. I'd forget I had been somewhere until I looked at my bank statement.

Your phone records where you are, I guess it could even tell someone when you get out of bed? Along with who & where your friends, relatives etc are.

Kind of scary in a way, but most people would not give it a second thought.

We could, of course, go without our smart phones, computers, modern cars & the digital world.
Do I want to do that?
    No!
So I have to put up with vaguely knowing I have very little real privacy, I don't like it, but I don't see an acceptable way around it.

Privacy has always been a perception.
Just remember - you’re 1 in 7.5 Billion... if you do nothing to draw attention you hardly stand out Your car has been spying on you, - and selling your information.

Yeah but government's pitch to the public. They love a good percentage. Data analysis across the entire population can direct paths to manipulate your vote, to gain and distract your attention. If they can analyse what the majority are thinking and doing in real time, they have a super power! We become a lower class of being, unable to think ahead of our superiors who continue to operate under the protection of privacy and secrecy whilst they have full access to the lives and minds of plebs

So far though, its been alright - Pleb life!

How do you think Trump did so well at election time?

There was a company that used Facebook data to determine how likely it was you could be swayed to vote for trump. They designed targeted ads for these people. I think it cost Trump about $5m too - peanuts in an American election.

The biggest concern is accidental or malfunction based wrong accusation. Wrong place at wrong time, even if it’s virtual. Freedom is a complex thing in the digital age.

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. My work vehicle I drive to the letter of the law as I’m never in a rush at work and never use my phone illegally either.

On the weekends if I’m driving the 101 then surveillance is hardly an issue as is speeding - and I rarely take my mobile with me.

And really - if they want to spy on me, they are in for a hell of a boring time....
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Most of us have a gps in the car. They track speed, lat and longitude, sometimes street name. All you need is a laptop with Excel.
Worried about people knowing where you were are etc, errm.. bit late. After an accident - take your gps with you.

    300Tdi doesn't tell them much!

Lots of the places I go to, there is none or very little in the way of phone or internet coverage.

Don't often have to worry about tripping speed cameras in the D1, either!
