My 98 was built 01/98.

My January 1997 build D1 wasn't first registered in Australia till mid/late 1998. There might be a few more 'first registered vs build date' anomalies out there for late 1998 builds.

I recently acquired (another) one and although it is a MY98, it is registered as a 99. I believe the reason for this is because it was delivered in April 99 (I have the original delivery docket).

So if you have a 98 model, what month was it built ??.

Our old D1 was Jan '99 on the compliance plate, & I thought November 98 on the build plate.

Our D1,300 TDI Auto was sold new in March 99 as a "runout" model,so I presume the D2's were on the showroom floor,we know that it was traded back to Austral Motors Brisbane for a D3,the previous owners dog people and involved in "non-slip"retrieving trials,ours is also used in the dog obedience transportation of our Border Collies

They were made in 98 because my 98 defender has a Disco coded engine in it. Pat
