    Touring in Qld.

    I am considering spending a few weeks in Qld over Winter. What is the go with national park passes and camping in national parks? Should I book van sites in caravan parks or is there normally room for travellers. I have heard that grey nomads book the place out.

    From: Camping fees (Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing)

    Fees for camping permits in national parks and other protected areas, forest reserves, State forests and recreation areas, from 1 July 2017:

    $6.35 per person per night, or $25.40 per family per night;
    $3.50 per person per night for students and accompanying adults on approved educational excursions.
    Family rate
    A family is 1 or 2 adults and accompanying children under 18 years.
    The family rate applies to a maximum of 8 people in total.

    Free of charge for children under 5 years.

    All prices include GST.

    Find out more about the parks at:

    Find a park or forest (Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing)

    In my experience, most of the grey nomads fill up all the free parking spots first! (Like truck rest bays etc! )
    We usually utilise van parks that are away from the main tourist attractions - lot less likely to be booked out, and you often meet a better class of people!

    You can do the national parks bookings online as you travel if you plan a few days ahead.
    Western Qld caravan parks usually have plenty of space, but call ahead if worried.
    Keep in mind its been very wet in the west recently, so off the bitumen could be boggy and some roads may be closed.
    Also, the wildlife swarm the roadsides in some areas, particularly those without fences, so plan to stop by about 4pm daily in the west so you don't T-bone a cow or camel.

    I was in Longreach two years ago and just made it out before the roads were cut with floodwater
