Barnie, just off the phone to the local tyre man. He has just tested the AT plus and was really impressed. He said they tested them in Disco5's and they were absolutely silent. Offroad he said they went everywhere, but he said they were in the wrong vehicles to test the tyres and the Discos and Rangie Sports would go anywhere backwards offroad with bald tyres anyway.

They have the same load rating as the Duratracs but a higher speed rating. The attractive part of the Maxxis for me was the load rating having a better margin.
Like everything there is always a compromise. Thanks again for your input. The road noise bit (or lack thereof) is appealing when on the black stuff.
Well I've just purchased a new D3 V8, and these are getting fitted as a part of the road worthy. Paid the guy the difference between a set of these and some cheap Chinese things he was going to fit lol. Cheapest Pirellis I've ever had!
I had the BFG KO2's on my last D3 (265/60R18), but as we well know, there is no 19" option for these, and the budget doesn't stretch far enough for a set of 18's just at the moment. Once I have the car I'll report back
My 275/55R20 Pirelli AT+ are now fitted. The BFG KO2 had worn enough to warrant their removal as they had been very noisy for a long time but 2 are retained as very good spares and a 3rd usable in an emergency. The other 2 besides being more worn on the inside edges have a large split/hole in the outer layer near the inside edge of the tread. The emergency spare has a couple of small radial cracks in the same area suggesting that the large holes may not be specific stone damage, perhaps starting as cracks. The tyres are quite hard - perhaps too hard for tyres only 3.5 years old and travelled 75K kms between 5 tyres so roughly 60K kms each.
It will be interesting to see how the Pirellis perform and survive. Their sidewalls bulge a little more than the BFG but barely any more at the bottom. They look tame compared with the BFGs but that's OK as the RR looks a little more civilised now.

I have 20x8.5 aftermarket wheels which have an offset of 32 as opposed to 57, so they should clear the struts and present slightly less of a problem on the fuel filler, I measured the gaps on access from the size that is currently fitted, 285/55 may just fit!
My first impressions at speed on my gravel road was that the large gravel stones were felt just as much as with the BFGs, suggesting that the carcass was reasonably heavy duty rather than a light-weight HT, in line with their LI 113 rating. Its far too early for me to know how well this tyre will fare but the recent report in Pirelli SCORPION ALL TERRAIN PLUS Reviews | Tyre Review Australia by the Amarok owner with the P-rated LI 112 265/65R17 indicates that at least that size with its taller sidewall would do that job that I'm wanting.
Both my BFG and AT+ lightly scrape the front wheel front liners at access height as the wheel is turned inwards sharply so larger diameter tyres on rims with less offset will be worse. I avoid making tight turns at access height.

All 5 tyres were swapped about attempting to keep wear even then the 3 more worn rotated between the rear and the spare so I don't know if both damaged tyres were last on the rear together, although I suspect they were. The tread of these 2 is considerably more stone-chipped than the 3rd so perhaps the coarse gravel and patches of ultra coarse blue metal used to repair my lane about 18 months ago has done most of the damage.
My Pirelli AT+ are not off to a good start, having picked-up a thin piece of metal just outside my gate which appears to have destroyed the tyre. The tyre was staked at the top of the sidewall just beside the tread where the rubber is still only sidewall thickness. The piece of metal is unusual in that it was cut off the end of a thin metal pipe strainer post stay and left behind by the fencing contractor some weeks ago, so not the usual nail or tek screw but shows that the tyre is vulnerable in that area. My supplier mentioned when sourcing the tyres that Pirelli were contemplating road hazard insurance so tomorrow the rep is getting a call. However having not seen any reference to road hazard cover by Pirelli in recent times, I expect to be up for a new tyre after only 1 month and 3.5K kms since fitting.
This P-rated size bulges significantly from the edge of the tread and appears to be only sidewall thickness, even though a little further down there are thicker rubbing pads. Prior to fitting the sidewalls appears to drop quickly from the tread but no longer after having been fitted for 1 month.
