They will tell you that tourists and winter sports crazies like snow. Everyone else hates it. It interferes with all aspects of life. I was there in Omaha from early November to Christmas and didn't get the worst of it. The locals told me that the real winter is January and February. I replied "you mean it gets worse than this?" The Missouri River had started to ice over. A year and a bit later I was three weeks in Milwaukee at the Allis plant in "real winter". Lake Michigan was frozen over and the ferry to Michigan had been closed for the winter.A guy from the Indiana Roads Dept. told me they spend half the year clearing ice and snow and finding somewhere to dump it and the other half is spent repairing frost damage.
I had to buy a full outfit of real winter clothing and then fought a battle with my Australian employer to be reimbursed for "private purchases." I gave up on the Sydney accountants and simply padded my expenses until I had enough back. Almost all of the schmutter I never wore again.
