    Green light for purchase

OMG. Wife has given the green light for me to purchase a 1998 Defender 110 300dti with 288,000 km located interstate. I have checked with Services SA here in Adelaide and when I drive it back. I have 14 days to get it inspected and then get it re-rego here. I spoke to the Vehicle In spection place and they said it’s more of a check for VIN and engine numbers etc.

Current owners has listed the bad points:
Rust in the top corner of the passenger side firewall (As seen on pics) tried to attach image but not sure if it works from iPad.
Carpets are pretty much finished in the footwells
Could use the seat boxes recovering at the same time
Steering wheel is wearing own top but doesn't twist
    A/C needs regassing
Clock cluster plastic surround and fan controls all need attention .
Little bits of rust here and there but the outriggers are excellent

My question is, when it’s goes for inspection, are they likely to fail it on the hole in the external skin on the bulkhead under the bonnet?

Also A/C controls can’t be seen from pictures provided and are not located on RHS next to knee as i’ve seen in later models. Awaiting feedback from owner to let me know if factory fitted or retro fitted and where the controls are.

I can think about getting the bad bits fixed in time but won’t have time or money to fix within the 14 days window for owner transfer.

Anyone know now of a good defender mechanic in Brisbane (close to CBD) that I can take the car to on the test drive for a quick look over. Need to be sure it will get me home to Adelaide.
Any other things to look for when I go would be much appreachated.
    Many thanks...

Just don't turn up for a vehicle ID check with bald tyres or major oil leaks. You'll make it through the ID check in any case but they may make you get a full roadworthy inspection if they don't like you. Be nice to them and you should get your local rego.

As stated, at Naweena Rd they are not doing roadworthy checks, just checking the numbers, ensuring it isn't listed as stolen interstate etc, but as said above, they will spot anything blatantly obvious, I went through with brake lights not working(I didn't know...and should have checked...), and he wouldn't give me my piece of paper until that was remedied.

If it were me, and the hole looks bad...I would slap a bit of bog in there and squirt a bit of paint on it, what the eye doesn't see etc.......

Depends on how fussy the inspector is

Current owners has listed the bad points:
Rust in the top corner of the passenger side firewall (As seen on pics) tried to attach image but not sure if it works from iPad. rust is a no no on some inspectors .
Carpets are pretty much finished in the footwells depends on how bad, a fussy inspector could deem them a foot catching hazard
Could use the seat boxes recovering at the same time maybe a cheap seat cover over top
Steering wheel is wearing own top but doesn't twist
    A/C needs regassing
Clock cluster plastic surround and fan controls all need attention Fan Controls - the demister must work for a road worthy

We have two inspection stations in Adelaide, one at Naweena Rd which OP will be attending for a 'numbers check'. The other is Regency Park, where they do roadworthies. Vehicles registered interstate go to Naweena Rd only, so not a full roadworthy inspection.

If the hole in the fire wall is through to the engine bay, it will need to be sealed. As posted with some bog. They will be more worried about exhaust gasses entering the drivers compartment than structural integrity.

Thanks to all whom responded, but I missed out on the one I was going to buy. Seller sold it before I got chance to go and view it.
