    Route planning around Sydney

On the 24th I'll be in Woolongong heading for Singleton. My first thought is to avoid Sydney like the plague (sorry Sydney siders) and head for Dunedoo and cut back via Merriwa but figure this may be a bit of an overkill.

So what I'm after is the least stressful route to get from Woolongong to Singleton in less than a day (scenery would be nice but low blood pressure would be nicer)

I'll be driving the Oka which cruises all day on 90-100 k's with the Cummins 6BT so hills aren't a big issue but don't particularly need to conquer Everest. My knowledge of Woolongong/Sydney/Singleton is nil. I've driven across the Simpson Desert more times than I've driven to Sydney so am a bit 'gun shy' of the possible 'experience'.

Straight up the freeway will take you around the back of Sydney. The only down side is this still includes Pennant Hills road and tolls.

From Wollongong up via Picton Rd to Picton - The Oaks - Penrith - Windsor - Putty Rd direct into Singleton.

    All toll free.

    Google Maps

One disadvantage is that you miss the Classic Car Museum at Gosford (I went last week).

Does the tag issued for the Brisbane toll roads work in Sydney and Melbourne. I will be driving down in the near future and will likely have to stop over in the eastern suburbs before continuing on .

Take Sesame Street ( Hume ), take the M7 exit at Prestons, follow that until it becomes the M2, take the Pennant Hills Rd exit, follow that to the M1 at Wahroonga, Then follow that until you reach the M15 Hunter Expressway. If you have an e-tag for Citylink or Eastlink it will work for the tolls in Sydney. And, yes, Pennant Hills Rd can be a nightmare.

If you like rocks, some of the scenery around Mt Kuring-Gai is pretty nice.

My NSW tag works in Qld and Vic so I assume the reverse applies.

Or, what Ron said. I was still in heavy vehicle mode.

    Especially with a manual gearbox!

I came back that way from Gosford the other day. I hit Pennant Hills Rd about 4pm. I was on my motorbike - up and down gears, in and out with the clutch. My hand was aching by the time I got home.

M5/M7 will be choked with traffic both ways as well as Pennant Hills Rd. Its even worse if there's been a prang or break down. If you're going that route allow minimum 2 hours for each way.
Good luck if you go this route.
