These days internet forums (e.g. AULRO) are closer "nit" communities than residential neighbourhoods.

Rubbish - half wouldn't even know and the rest mostly wouldnt care as long as its not them.
I grew up in a small community but it wasn't close knit. The amount of jealousy, back biting and viciousness was unbelievable.
I will dispel all you thoughts. We live in a 10 household dead end street. We know everyone on our street and have regular get together BBQ's.
Our Neighbor can tell us what vehicle drives up our drive way when not at home. I think if something happens (thank it doesn't happen) We can say we are a close knit community.
