I spent many of my childhood years trudging through the snow/slush to school and back So I am not a fan.
I have yet to fish and cruise the Buccaneer Archipelago and I have yet to go to the Vic high country in winter, It's a tough choice

If you based at Corryong, it's a short trip from there up to Geehi.
This area is very close to the snow line, and there are a few tracks you can explore if you hunt around. One of the best things is waking up, looking out the window of Keebles Hut with the fire going and seeing snow capped mountains. Have done this a few times, but many years ago now. I suspect the tracks you could access back then are long gone now. A lot were un-named back then, were good fun, but rarely came across snow, even on the June long weekend, or the reopening weekend.
We used to go from there up to Tom Groggin's Camp Ground, cross over the Murray and head up Davies Plain Track. Beautiful scenery up that way, and at certain times of the year, you can experience snow.
Another option, could be to head over to Mitta Mitta and climb up the Omeo Hwy. There's quite a few tracks up there off to the right sort of heading towards Mount Bogong, these quite often lead to snow covered tracks to play around on. Quickest way to Mitta from Corryong is to probably head over through Lucyvale towards Tallangatta. A few dirt roads/tracks you can venture on along the way
Hope this helps, or gives you some ideas on what/where to go. The only thing I would advise, is to make sure you are well stocked with recovery gear,, as in straps and winch gear. I've always carried these, but "rarely" needed them,, well, for the first few years of my 4x4ing career in the SWB S3, whilst exploring this area, I didn't have anything![]()
From Corryong your best bet is south-ish towards MittaMita(nice valley) onwards and towards Omeo.
Past Mitta and Dartmouth Dam is a spot called Granite Flat. Not too much further south you can turn into the mountains and look for Trappers tracks(Trappers Ck, Trappers Road, etc).
if you look at the pdf map 35F, look for track No7 listed as closed, which is Mountain Ck Road. This one is closed, but the tracks around it going in a similar direction aren't!
No guarantee that you will get through tho if there are big snow falls.
This is the higher part of the high country .. Mt Bogong only a few klms as the crow flies from those tracks.
So from south of Granite Flat you're heading east towards Mt Beauty and into the hoardes again!
Roads gets up nice and high and you're almost dead cert to get into the snow. if it's not snowing, there's a high chance there'll be snow on the ground.

If you want hard track open in winter try mt sunday road. better have a winch that works and is in good condition
I spent 6 winters driving keen people to the snowfields in a coach, and 6 winters driving drunks home from the snowfields. As I was the driver I was not allowed to engage in any activities for the 8 or so hours my passengers were living it up, so I'm not a fan either. Oh yeah, fitting chains on a heavy coach is a barrel of laughs. So, I'm with you, fishing and cruising in the warm. Victoria's high country is much nicer in Spring and early Autumn.

Lots of great suggestions guys. I will take note of all of them. As i said i have been through the high country in summer and it was gorgeous, but would love to see some snow.
Any tips on buying a set of snow chains? I figure i could buy a set beforehand instead of hiring a set once i get there...
You'll be able to buy them any where in the region basically. I guess once you've gone through, you may be able to resell them, or depending on who you get them from, you may be able to cut a deal with them in regards to returning them back to where you get them from,, (in which case, they may just tell you to hire a set). From memory, I don't recall them being expensive to hire anyway.
The only thing you need to do is make sure you get the right sized ones for your wheels, which they will help you with too.
