    Perth suburbs to avoid?

After spending much of last year and this one contemplating the future, me and Mrs Strangy are leaving Alice Springs after 14 years and headed for Perth.

Have done a lot of reading through the real estate websites and others. We had a few hours last week to drive around some of the perceived affordable areas which seemed to have reasonable neighbourhoods.

I need to be within 40ish minutes of the airport in typical traffic. We have an upper budget of 500k and dont want to be able to have a conversation with the neighbour through the window of each others bathroom.
Units, duplex and townhouses are out for us as we have a couple of feathered friends who love to greet and farewell the sun most days.

Not expecting new, beach or river property.

I thought it easier to ask for the ones to avoid.

    Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

I know you asked for negatives, but! And as you know, Perth is very spread out and with reasonable road systems, but realistically limited public transport (compared to Melb/Sydney, but maybe not the Alice). Infill has now become the buzz word, with the issue of utilities services won't be able to cope to deal with the density to follow.

At the risk of being called a snob, some of the lower socio-economic state housing areas can be a bit sus, although many of the older ones are being sold off and being bought for refurb or redevelopment. It is a moving feast. Any decent real estate agent will be able to quickly put you straight. Otherwise, just about any suburbs in the hills around the airport could suit.

We now live in Fremantle (moved from up market Mt Lawley just north east of the city about 7 years ago when we retired), and which is probably just a little further travel than you would prefer at 45 - 60 minutes on good major roads, but is surprisingly cheap real estate (relatively speaking for what you have available), and has plenty of variety, reasonably priced good restaurants, river and ocean etc.

You will of course be welcomed wherever you end up.
    Cheers Gavin

Have look in the "hills' area. About ~30-35mins from the airport at any time of day without the feeling of living in suburbia.

In the new digital age, you might want to enquire which areas got the NBN fibre to the premises.
