Hah, as a caver and climber I dont understand the ropes thing. Some of the things I have done with ropes and are perfectly safe to use with no fraying leads me to believe that in a bit of water for a while they will be fine.
And I understand the 1/3 rule - it's not all underwater and they would have spare tanks dropped off along the way.
If you plan ahead a lot of the issues you are bringing up are minimised, and there is no reason why they wouldn't have done that. It's hardly like they rushed the rescue to the point safety during the rescue was much greater than a planned dive.
Again, I am not saying what they did doesn't deserve praise, just hardly miracle worthy as a tag line.
