I got one when on the south coast. The nurse squirted it with Start ya Bastard the pulled the bugger out. Apparently it has ether in it so it sends them to sleep. She said it was the only one that has ether in it

Yes, ether-based sprays, as already mentioned.
DEET!
We used Bushmans with DEET in it. We found it worked very well as a repellent on our last trip to the NSW South Coast after being inundated the first few days. We also found a spray onto one that has started to burrow in worked after a few seconds.
Definitely don't squeeze. I'm interested to try the Freeze method next time though.
I've read that DEET will only work in the area it has been sprayed onto, so coverage is important. The percentage of DEET determines the time it will last on your skin.
