Trailer thieves. .. bypassing your hitch lock

my brother was talking to some cops .... apparently the "usual" is a cordless angle grinder with a 1mm disc .... and a tshirt (someone holds it over to cover the sparks). Heavy chains and big padlocks are cut in mere seconds ( ie: 3 to 4 seconds) with a cordless angle grinder.

I've seen better than the bolt on hitch (that takes time). Any 4wd or truck with a rear step (like my rangie has). You back up, drop the hitch onto the rear step ... wrap the safety chains around the step so it doesn't fall off, and your good to go. You don't need to go far and you can pull over and hook it up properly.

NOTHING is going to stop someone that wants to steal your trailer/caravan. Rebirthing is so easy it is ludicrous.

I have hitch locks and chains holding my trailers and caravans down. 3 chains and a hitch lock is .....20seconds ? work with a cordless angle grinder.... You can win. If you block the trailer/caravan in with another car. They'll just drag/push it out of the way with whatever the stolen towcar is.

Noise doesn't worry the thieves around here. They operate in broad daylight. An older once working/middle class suburb undergoing urban renewal and yuppification. There is always noise, builders machinery, mowers, tree chippers and saws, trucks and plant. No-one takes any notice of an extra small angle grinder. A guy downhill from me in the next road had his very posh and expensive pop top camper stolen from next to his house in working hours when no-one in the street is home. All are at work trying to meet the million dollar+ mortgages. A neighbour's security camera did get the tow vehicle and its number plate. Alas, the tug was a commodore ute and the plates belonged to a Mitsubishi Lancer which the wallopers eventually traced to the long term car park at the airport sans plates..

Boat ramps are also a prime thief area, low lifes steal boat trailers under the nose of people around. They even steal the D shackles of safety chains, and I've even had the caps stolen off my schaedervalves on the tyres whilst parked there.

Yep, steal the wheels off the trailer, wait while the owner goes for more, replace wheels, load boat and make off with both.

That's pretty clever actually... Bloody scum, but clever...

Bit off topic but in moonee ponds they have bluestone roundabouts. A few guys were going round in the middle of the day stealing the stones. They were dressing up in hi vis, setting up roadwork signs and just stealing them. None of the public had a clue till a week later when know one came back to replace them. That was few years ago now they probably wouldn't even dress up they would just steal them under everyone nose.
Had a bloke steal a dropsaw straight out of my Ute whilst getting tools out in the morning. He just pulled up along side barely got out the car and drove off with the saw on his lap. Turned up at cashies a week later thank F

In Pittsburgh there are still streets in older areas paved with 19th. Century cobblestones. These are in demand for driveways and paving in swish new houses. In Wilmarding there are a number of streets that cross Air Brake Avenue with a short dead end that butts up against a railway line. All industrial, no residents. In 2011 some smarty worked out that you could take a tip truck and backhoe in there at night, dig up the street, and be gone in minutes.
