Employment interviews how things have changed.

Our youngest son Brendon has finished Uni and graduates in a couple of weeks . He wants a part time job for the interim to get some funds together
So he applied for a couple of jobs on the net .
How things have changes these days, employers do online interviews. Some are only automated robot interviews
He applied for a job at one of the German supermarkets and got called to come into a group interview. Some of the candidates were 10 mins late . Some didn't know anything about the employer. Brendon had done his research before and knew answers like when the company opened in Australia and who the parent company was.
He got a call back to say they wanted a police check and a medical.
Today he went to the medical ( which was paid for by the company) had a physical and an eye test. The Doctor told him that the company was pretty strict.
They are only a supermarket and not the military LOL, it seems they want fit and healthy employees even when it it only part time.
So it sounds promising if they are paying for medicals etc that they must be interested in hiring him.
I remember when I was young I also got jobs via a fiends or word of mouth or recommendations. How things have changed now.

Medical is the norm. Especially in jobs with a physical component, eg packing shelves etc. The HSE risk of hiring someone who is not up to par is too big.
The medical is a hefty bill, so he’s got it in the bag it would seem. I don’t put people thru to that stage unless I am really ready to hit the go button. No regerts.

I work in recruitment - and there are a heap of things that are done differently now to when I started 10 years ago.

Video interviewing is actually pretty cool, we use it when we want to screen quite a few people at once but it gets pricey so when you get it you have made the first cut. It's then an opportunity for you to differentiate yourself. If you don't have all the skills for the role but answer well you will get an interview where as just a CV we might skip over.

Strict medicals are fairly standard now - my high blood pressure was enough to have to make me get a medical clearance from a Doctor so they'd employ me. That's the hardest bit for me, I'm lucky enough that I haven't had to apply for a job in over 20 years now, I just get asked all the time by people to go work for them. Sometimes I say yes so that's the only reason I've encountered these medicals.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Went to an interview for Aus. Post back in 1985, at Nundah. Walked into the waiting area, about five people waiting, three Europeans, two Asians. Fellow came out with sheet of paper, an extract from a book, in English. Said to study it, he would ask questions about it. Went in, had the interview, was told they would contact me, interview over. When I asked why no questions on the sheet of paper, he said that was only to weed out those who did not have an understanding of English. Walked out, the Asians had left. Got the job, left after 25 years.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Go to the age at around 3am (melbourne city) when the first papers were printed on a Saturday. (you could buy them hot off the press)
Sit down and drink coffee and circle all the jobs i wanted to go for.
Ring like a mad man from 7am onwards on Saturday and again Monday. Interviews that next week and normally working before weekend.

    Thats how i got jobs.

Never medical or cops reports back then. THANK GOD!!

Ready to start the merry go round again, having left Brisbane, relocating to Melbourne. I am hoping a well composed resume will help , and a ledger jobs market. My gut feeling I will revolve through a series of casual day labouring jobs , and rent a slave agencies before anything permanent. But as the move has gone fairly smooth maybe the good luck will continue. For me , the days of talking to a mate or someone at the pub seem a distant memory.

Yep its how people around here get jobs now days. Seems the new standard.

Funny story, i went to a job placement thing many years ago, sat down and spoke to a nice young lady.
She asked what skills i have, Told here im a tradesman to which she replied....... "Whats that".
Being the tolerant person i am i walked out.

Never went back to that place.
