    Unregistered Vehicle Permit - NSW

    Hi All,

I have purchased a No.5 trailer from the last round of Minto auctions, and am planning on driving to Sydney next weekend to pick it up.

I was planning on getting an permit online - which you can do in Victoria, but I believe that I can’t do it online in NSW...

The permit needs to be organised in the originating state.

    What are other people’s experience?

Can I get somebody in NSW to get a permit on my behalf? Or do I have to do it in person...

What have Victorian people done when purchasing Perenties and then driving them home?

    Suggestions please!

(I wish that all states and Territories could have the same laws, rules and regulations to make life easier! Unregistered Vehicle Permit - NSW)

    Cheers,
    GG

I bought a hallmark 750kg and also tried to get a unregistered vehicle permit so that I can get it home.

But RMS paramatta refuse to do so because they can not verify the vin, although I have a blue slip for the trailer.
So I waited a 3 weeks till someone from vin department at RMS gave me a call, asked for a "colored" ("it has to be colored") photo of the vin plate. Then in that arvo, I got the trailer registered. This was back in July 2018.

Things may be different now and also no.5 will be different too.

Check with registration authority in NSW to confirm they recognise interstate unregistered permits and under what circumstances and conditions. A bloke who for over 18 months lived at my place in Northern Victoria and had his own local Post Office box much longer than that subsequently for another year lived on site operating a business in NSW Northern Riverina. He and offsider were buying and selling a few mainly unregistered vehicles. Re one which was collected from Orange NSW, he claimed the Victorian permit using his Victorian address obtained to drive it home was legal. Also much less requirements than for obtaining a NSW one for the same purpose. Anyway worth checking. Long ago when I obtained some unregistered permits for moving self propelled machines in NSW, am sure it wasn't legal.

Hi GG, this could get awfully complicated (but I hope it doesn't) .....

It will in part depend on whether the No.5 has been given a vin by afm and also in part on whether they have placed that vin on the register.

Can I suggest a simpler method could be for you to get KLR [(02) 4577 5010] to pick it up and arrange a VIN (if you even need one in VIC)? Discuss with Bradley your intentions and see what they can do, even arranging freight down for you.

I know a fee would be involved if you go ahead with them, but , speaking from experience, I think that trying to get a UVP out of the NSW RMS could end up as a "can of worms". It is sort of like "they can't bear giving them out" !

Alternatively, if you can get your own VIC UVP that can be legally used as Mox suggests above - then that would be much simpler.

Can you just get a vic permit (ie vic-nsw-vic)? If you were stopped just say you were on your way home...

I am wondering what other Victorians did. I am definitely going to ring KLR (Brad) as he has been very helpful.

As far as I am aware the permit needs to be issued where the journey begins but is recognised by all jurisdictions (except WA). To get a permit from NSW is a pain if you are not there to go to the office to get it (Mick Marsh) had a thread on this a while back.

It is probably easier to take a trailer up and collect it - but if you are going to be up there in advance in working hours a permit might be doable.

I have towed a trailer back from Wyong to Yass on an unregistered vehicle permit. Getting it was not a problem except that I needed to do it in person at the Motor registry. The permit is issued for a destination with a stipulation that it is taken via the shortest practical route. It seems that you can apply over the phone if you exist in the NSW system as well.
